What Should You Do after an Auto Accident?

Nobody leaves the house in the morning thinking that they are going to get into an accident. However, we all know that accidents do happen and it's what you do after the accident that can change your life. If an accident occurs, you should be sure to call a car accident lawyer in Minneapolis immediately. Here are 3 other things that you need to do that can make your life easier going forward.

Stick Around

Unless you want to run into a whole heap of legal trouble involving leaving the scene of an accident or facing charges for a hit and run, then you need to stop your car and stay at the scene. No matter how minor the accident was, leaving the scene, even if just for a minute, is perhaps the biggest mistake you can make. Although you might be afraid of getting in trouble, you will be worse off if you dont stay around to discuss the situation with police.

Keep the Scene Safer

Do what you can to protect the scene and make the situation safer for other cars that are passing by. If you have flares in the trunk of your car, you can set those up. If not, make sure to pull to the side of the road and turn on your emergency flashers. If your lights no longer work, turn on the lights in your car or have a flashlight at the ready to make sure other cars driving by see you on the side of the road.

Call the Police

The next thing you need to do is call the police. This needs to be done as soon as possible so that you can file a police report while the details are still fresh in your mind. The accident does not need to be major for a police report to be relevant. Even if there are no injuries or just minor injuries, the police report is still important for insurance purposes.
